To the MTA Board:

The proposed addition to the Rules of Conduct of the New York City Mass Transit Authority (MTA) stating "No photograph, film or video recording shall be made or taken on or in any conveyance or facility by any person, except members of the press holding valid press identification cards issued by the New York City Police Department..." is a horrible idea. In this age of micro-electronics and digital photography a person who wanted to take photographs for some nefarious purpose would have no problem at all. Yet, a person wishing merely to enjoy and capture one of the foremost things that makes New York City beautiful and great, while still obeying the law, would be out of luck. This law-abiding person is likely a tourist or an artist, and tourists and artists are two of the pistons that drive the economy and culture of New York City. Add to that the fact that this proposed ban, if enforced, would add to a culture of fear that sensible New Yorkers do their best to avoid (Not to say that there are no threats; we hear about them every day. But to react to threats with blind, liberty-reducing fear instead of with sense, awareness and vigilence is, frankly, a loss that we as a city cannot wholly recover from). I trust that you will agree, and continue to keep the MTA a photography friendly zone, while maintaining the safety that we all enjoy.

Warmly--
Christopher Stangland
